Artist's Description
Colorized photo from 1909
Original Title: A union shop
Location: Tampa, Florida
Not much has changed over the years, rolling cigars by hand. The set up, the booths, its pretty much the same. This particular shop is located in Florida, its a union shop, and has almost no one under 20 years old. Which seems normal today, but back in those days, kids did the grunt work.
This is also an equal opportunity employer they seem to have a nice mix of both male and female workers doing the same thing. This cigar factory employed around 60 people.
Conditions were dark, and hot. As you can see a lot of people stripped off their collars and suspenders, many of them hanging off of chairs, or just sitting around. It probably gets pretty sunny there as well, there are a lot of improvised curtains set up.
About Mike Savad
My name is Mike Savad, I create one of a kind images. Photo realistic, is what people think of first. I specialize in job themes, such as Pharmacist, Doctor, Firemen, Lawyer, etc. Steampunk is another favorite. I'm certain you will find something that you will like. My art is inspired by Norman Rockwell and Paintings from the time of the Renaissance. Be sure to visit my Scene in Color section. I expertly restore and colorize black and white images. See the past come alive with color. Each image is painstakingly cleaned and repaired, colors are researched and shaded in. Images are designed to coordinate with the rest of my collection. The past was far more colorful than you would have imagined. Want something fun to do? Sometimes I hide...
