Living in a tent, in the winter, meant you were very cold. So cabins like these were built. Many officers would pack into one as you can see here. It did a decent enough job insulating people, its better than a tent anyway. They would build it with found materials, though I don't know where the windows came from.
While waiting to fight again they would have a series of chores to do. Mending clothes, shining shoes, cutting wood. sweeping dirt, or just supervising, were some of the many things they did there.
Why is there a guy on the roof? Who knows. It was winter, so it could be snow he's about to throw. But there is no snow any where else, so maybe he's eating bread, and there were no other seats?
