Pharmacists did a lot more back then they do now. While they have to be educated to know about drug interactions, much of it is automated, and large companies make the medicine, today's pharmacists dispense pills. The pharmacists of yesterday had to mix their own. As a result their shops often were filled with jars, boxes, drawers, and cases of just about everything. Whether these cures helped or not is up to debate, but it sure must have been fun watching them make it.
