Original Title: In the roundhouse at a Chicago and Northwestern Railroad yard
Photographer: Jack Delano
Location: 40th St, Chicago, IL
We are standing in the Northwestern Railroad Yard's, round house. The roundhouse is a large circular building that holds trains for repairs and maintenance. Inside workers and craftsman figure out what is wrong with them and often make major repairs on them.
Inside it was often dusty, smokey, very dirty. They used to use asbestos as well, so that was also in the air. Naturally in the winter was probably the worse because the doors were probably closed. But the task had to be done by someone.
