There must have been a good story to go along with this image, but it seems lost to history.
Imagine, your standing next to a machine that is covered in paint, pinstripe and all of that. Then one day, a photographer comes by, says I want your pictures. They look at their engine and think hmmm, it ain't perty enough.
So they run around and grab ribbons, find the plants they had growing in the back, placing it on the locomotive just so it can all look good. I suppose it could just be a very fancy plant holder, how else is it going to get light?
That structure in the black is a Blockhouse, they used it to secure the rail lines.
