Original Title: East and West shaking hands at the laying of the last rail, Union Pacific Railroad
Location: Promontory Summit, UT
This photo, taken by Andrew J Russell, captures the moments after they drove the last spike in. They are about to celebrate with Campaign. I think its pretty amazing that people back in the 1860's and so on, had to drag a big box around, a 10x13" glass plate, use a cover over the lens, because they didn't have an iris, and guess how long it will take, then develop it right there on the spot. What is even more amazing I think, is to tell everyone to hold still while they shoot it. Being a photographer meant something totally different back then, compared to now.
Also an interesting side note, that this wasn't even the first picture. This was hours after they did it, the photographer broke his glass plate, and they had to stage it again. That's why there is a lack of females and other workers... They went home. I honestly like this shot better though.
These original locomotives were sold for scrap at a $1000 a piece, they now have similar replica's on this spot, I used those trains to get these colors.
People war a lot of brown and black in those days, I wanted some bright spots, mostly in the center, and then radiating from there, duller colors. The womenfolk seemed to have gone home, so we only have guys in this photo.
