Description
This is what a typical classroom looked like in mid to late 1800s to 1900s. Often found in rural communities, it usually taught all the children in the area. From young to old they would all be in that room.
Kids had jobs, one of which included shoveling coal or wood for the stove in the winter. Or they would all freeze. Kids would learn to read, learn their numbers and often write things down on a slate, or later on paper with a quill pen.
School would let out so they could go work in the fields. This is also the type of room where you would wear a dunce cap in front of the room if you were bad.
