Description
It's the first day of school, find a desk, stoke the fire. If your bad, you get the dunce cap. I guess they took turns using it. You can't use the excuse that your dog ate your homework, because it was on slate.

I went to 3 one-room schools in the 60s. There were two grades in each schooi. There was no indoor plumbing or central heating. We had a cast iron stove. Someone delivered water to fill the large barrel with a spigot that we pressed to dispense the water. It was made from pottery with wide, dark blue stripes. It was sitting on a shelf next to a sink although we didn't have running water. Our teacher raised the flag every day. The teacher prepared our test papers on an old-fashioned mimeograph machine. I've seen it at the museum. The Red Brick School later became a museum. When I was in the 7th and 8th grades, we had central heating and indoor plumbing. The town where I lived had extraordinary teachers. Even though we were a small school, a large percentage of the top honor students at the high school I attended in a nearby town were from that same quaint, one-room school. We have our teachers to thank for that.
