Original title: Center Market
Location: 7th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Over a hundred years ago, where the National Archives currently reside, the first super store existed. The Center Market, was built in 1871, it housed over 700 vendors. By 1900 you could buy almost anything here, from cars to fruit. It was designed to have lighting and ventilation, had rows where people could walk, people were encouraged to simply stroll casually, as no vehicles were allowed.
You could get a full day of shopping here, meat, fruit, sundries, etc. In its day it was the largest market of its kind. And stores of today, were designed after this place, in layout. It started the rise to super markets.
The place was demolished in 1931, to make way for the National Archive.
