Stuff was simply more elegant in the old days. Heavy duty, covered in bling, cars don't have this much pinstripe.
This is a Henry R Worthington Hydraulic works pump, no 595. Based on a the patent date, this should be a duplex steam feed pump, patent 24838. It was issued on 7/19/1859. It was new and improved over the old design which only had one cylinder, this has two. This design held firm to at least 1901 where it was improved again.
What really made it stand out was the paint job they put into it. In the old days a person was proud of the machine they made and they gave it an expert paint job. Its no different than civil war locomotives that got the same fancy treatment. Every surface has some decoration on it.
