Description
Colorized photo from 1939
Original title: De Havilland aircraft factory
Photographer: William Hall Raine
Location: Rongotai, Wellington, NZ
This is the De Havilland aircraft factory in New Zealand. It started in the late 1920's and ended in 1963. They were known for their innovation, and revolutionized general aviation in the 1920s. They were the creators of the Moth biplane, Fox Moth (the first commercial transport able to operate without a government subsidy), the wooden World War II Mosquito, a multi-role aircraft, and the passenger jet service pioneering Comet.
These particular aircraft should be the Tiger Moth (DH.82), a two seat bi-plane, which was operated by the Royal Air Force primarily as a trainer aircraft. This shouldn't be confused with the Tiger Moth (DH.71 which was a single wing). It had a De Haviland Gipsy III engine, it was introduced in 1932, defunct in 1959.
As you can see it was built entirely by hand with nothing more than metal wood and canvas.
