Colorized photo from 1918 July 4th
Original Title: Fourth of July Parade with a Curtiss bombing plane mounted to a truck.
Location: 5th Ave & 58th St looking south
People did weird, crazy and stupid things back then. Such as this, this is a 4th of July parade float featuring an airplane, mounted to a flat bed. The propeller spins, with people sitting on the bed of the truck, just a foot or two from a spinning blade.
I'm sure they really weren't thinking that far ahead when they set this up, or they were simply too complacent about things like this.
Anyway, for those that are interesting this plane is a Curtiss speed scout (sometimes known as a Baby Scout or Model S-1). It never became a plane that went into production. The wings were too short, especially the bottom ones. It ended up being a prototype that they modified over they years.
