Description
Colorized photo from the 1910's March
Original Title: Dr Higgins, Exterior bldg
Location: Manor St and Warren ave, Deerborn Mi
This building still exists today, which is good, because a lot of detail would have been lost, such as the red pattern in the bricks, which blended in pretty well. There wasn't any address or location in the name of this image. I was able to figure out the location by seeing the local newspaper on that pole. And there was also a street address. Eventually I found it on google. Looking through the streets history, this building has had a lot of tenants over the years.
The original image had a big missing corner, a lot of sky and road. You can't see that in the comparison because I cropped it out. I had to rebuild the pole and the wires. Getting the mottling out of the sky was a bit tricky, and the building was a really dull gray color without much contrast. But there was enough info to get contrast out of the piece, it just took some time.
I chose alternate color stripes for the awnings, while it takes more work, I wanted a colorful piece. The store on the right, The great Atlantic & Pacific tea company, is the long version of A&P (a grocery store chain). I chose a vivid blue for the sign on the drug store, I wanted it to pop, but didn't want to fall back on red. The date range is 1900-1920, I'm thinking this is around 1920, but I don't know enough about cars, and I couldn't find a reference for these that didn't fall on 1930 (the company that made this went out of business in 1925).
