Description
Colorized photo from 1910
Original Title: Theatre Comique
Location: 1249-1251 Broadway, Detroit MI
As complex as it looks, it was easier than I thought it was going to be, and a bit more fun. Parts of this had an almost carnival like feel to it, it has a lot of filigree and lights. They sure liked the detail and schmaltz back then.
For the colors, I was aiming for elegance and extravagance. The main part of the sign is a large curtain drawing upward. I chose a dark pink for that. The main part of the sign probably screamed for attention, so it probably was a brighter red, and if it wasn't, it should have been. I wanted the lights on for this, so its extra bright with some glowing added.
The aqua makes a nice eye catch and it extends through the scene so you look at all of it.
The original image had a time span of 1900-1920. The building itself opened in 1908, and it looks a bit worn in spots, so its later than that. And I saw a picture of it in the 1920's, and most of that sign is gone, and it became a movie theater. So this could be any where between 1910 and maybe 1915 or so.
