Description
Colorized photo from 1910
Original title: 16" gun in construction at Watervliet
Photographer: Bain News
Location: Watervliet, NY
The Watervliet arsenal (a part of the US Army) was founded in 1813 to support the war of 1812, it was officially designated an arsenal in 1817. It occupies 142 acres of land and is still in use today. It's currently a National Historic Landmark, designated in 1966. Today they still use it to make cannon tubes, mortars and tanks.
This gun we see is a 16in seacoast cannon that is in mid construction. Standing on top of it, is Seacoast shop foreman Carl Christiansen.
I really wanted to make the beams darker, like a brick red color, I thought that would have stood out better. But as it turns out, they were more of a blue gray color, I know this because not only does it still exist, but there is a postcard of it, also showing gray beams.
The crane was probably the same color, but I like making my cranes safety yellow and it stands out better as well.
The date of this is sort of unknown, the photo said it was 1910-1915, but the Army's page about this said it was 1895. So I just went with 1910 because its in the middle.
