Colorized photo from 1898
Original title: Elswick - Finishing big guns
Photographer: Bain News
Location: Newcastle, UK
The original had a chunk missing on the lower right, which I was about to fix when I came across a jpg of this which curiously had more on the top than this one did. But it was on the small side, I was only able to use the part I needed on the bottom, I really wanted to use the top but it was too soft.
I thought it was weird that there are no people in this and its very clean. I can only assume this was a poster shot for the company or they were showing off. I would have liked to see it with people, to get a sense of scale. They called these big guns, but they are toys compared to the big guns they will be making 20 years from now. So it would have been interesting to see a person in here.
The things I thought were interesting in here were mostly the lights. I have never seen gas lights in a shop before, let alone a huge mirror. I've seen evidence that they once existed but these look like they were in use, as there were no lights. In the day they had roof sun lights, but on a cloudy day it must have been quite dark.
There is a drain hole for oil as well, usually you don't see that in a shop like this. One would also think that the cannons would be removed for the next step, and not just balanced on stacks of lumber.
