Colorized photo from 1902
Original title: Assembling Dept, National Cash Register
Location: Dayton, OH
I tried to guess how bright the room was, there is a wall of windows, and it looks like the photographer overexposed it by quite a bit. Getting detail in the main items, but washing out the windows completely. But I think it was more like this, there was glaring light made better with the shades, along with some of the smaller lights
I nipped some of the ceiling off, the corner on the left was very dark, and I did the best I could to sort of ignore that spot, that's why I'm thinking this room was on the dark side, despite the windows.
I've read that they took in suggestions, such as wanting chairs with backs on it. And as you can tell, they ripped down shelves and any other flat wood they could find and beat the boards to death in some spots. You might be able to see it up close, that row of dents. I noticed a series of drawers and they all seem like different colors that looked added on as well.
On the right toward the middle, there is a board of buttons, I haven't a clue what they are for. When I looked up the colors of the registers, the ones I have as brass may have been nickel, but I chose brass because it looks better. The inner workings however, they seem to be steel, the drawers were wood.
You can sort of see how they were made here, building the locks, and keying them, and they are moved from one table to another. I can't imagine how strong that person must have been, talk about back breaking, the weigh 50-80 pounds!
