Unusually stacked piles of hay, each tall and cylindrical with a spike in the center. And while this was made over a 100 years ago, this same exact practice is still being used. Tested over time, these hay stacks were the final result.
Layers of new grass are placed on the top, the spike holds it together, the grass is layered with a rake to all orient downward. They want the rain to shed off of it, so the hay doesn't ferment or rot. They also don't want it too dry or it could catch fire.
The tools have changed over the years, but the traditions have not. This hay has to feed the animals over the long winter ahead, its very important to do it right. Its a lot of hard work, if done wrong, the animals could all die.
