I'm hoping I got the colors right in this. I found that each regimen had its own coloration, each one different, with some consistencies. Union soldiers are usually blue, dark on top, light on bottom. Or light on top and bottom with a leg stripe that is a darker color. But I can only rely on old paintings and not all of them are painted. And I don't know if engineers in this case, had a special outfit on, and they just weren't celebrated like the soldiers were. There is a chance that some of them had a few colors on, but I couldn't find proof of that one way or another.
I cloned out a dent in the tent that made it look like had had a feather on his hat, and a tree on the right for the same reason.
These old pictures are funny though, they don't all look up at attention. Many almost seem like they are goofing off, or we just happen to catch them all working. Some read, look down, talk to others. Also in this picture they seem to be standing on saplings, I don't quite get why they did that, but there are small trees mixed in with them.
The guys standing here are from the 8th New York State Militia, Engineer company. They are the ones that build things like bridges, scout out locations, map out areas, clear roads and so on. I'm not sure if the drummers there are to keep them entertained, or if using a pick axe also needs drumming.
