The colors were funny with past technology. Wet plate photography, depending on what the material was when shot, the chemicals used etc to develop it, the colors in the scene will look different. The dark blue uniforms, are black in the scene. yet that flag, is also a dark blue, but the image makes it look white. It's weird.
What's also weird are the things they took into battle with them. Like a chess board? Keeping track of the pieces must have been a pain. But I guess considering they brought with them large wooden trunks, beds and desk sets, or tables, I guess that's just normal.
They shot this image for the guy facing us, his name is Col. James P. McMahon. I guess that's his family behind him. The way he's sitting makes it look like he was just there and wanted a shot to make them look intellectual. But it doesn't look like he was sitting there for a long time.
