I do wonder if the pipes still look like this in NY right now, or were they all replaced? When I researched this, there were many stories of finding wooden pipes, used in the 1700-1850 era, so that was neat.
They are digging the pipes out (looks like by hand), to (I assume), re-route them. That trolley there will have a long moving cable that is gripped by the trolley and moved along it, sort of like a roller coaster. And like a roller coaster, around turns people would fly off the thing. There were tight bends in the tracks that got people hurt, they often named it dead man's turn. There were no brakes on this thing, they, I guess picked people up by either launching a harpoon at them, or perhaps they jumped on with the right timing. There probably was something that slowed it down as they let go of the cable, but my ideas are equally as valid.
I did find this location, it was tricky as none of the buildings survived. There is a menu from the restaurant on the corner on one site. Over the years, I think it had thousands of menu items.
This trolley was short lived though, due to the injuries, lasting around 10 years or so.
I always find it interesting how many people run into the shot, and these are some really interesting people. There poses are priceless, almost gunslinger like. I also like to play the game - spot the time traveler or spot Marty McFly, and he is in here, looks like him anyway.
