From 1892-1902, Ernest Roeber (shown on the left) was a great wrestler, he fought in the US and abroad. He was a champion at Greco-Roman wrestling, and was known as Adonis of the Bowery. He was well known to wrestling fans.
This is his saloon, he created it about a year before his official retirement, he actually own two. They only lasted till 1920 when Prohibition took effect, it sort of destroyed the business.
However while he was open, he apparently got into fights easily. Police had to be called in a number of times. He was in an urban area, and fights seemed to break out easily then. Only trouble was, he was a pro wrestler, and his honesty and reputation took a serious hit. It made it look like he didn't play fair in the ring. However that said he did go back to the ring in 1930, only this time as a ref. But then had to quit due to an enlarged heart and left in 1934, he died at the age of 82 in 1944.
The guy next to the newsstand is his son or one of his sons.
