If you live in NY, you may have passed this spot a thousand times and never gave it a second thought. This is Pier 45, which is currently a very nice park. The road you see here, people jog on, there are benches and streets.
In the past almost every coastline in NY looked like this. Lined with piers, buildings, docks and boats. There are people moving cruise ships, coal vessels (you can see one being loaded by hand on that long cruiser.
The dock was split up here, allowing barges to dock while the large ships were tended too. I can only assume they had to wait till the others left if they wanted to leave themselves.
People used this area to get dirt, gravel, wood and I beams too.
