A lot of work went into this one, it might be my most complex one yet. It's amazing how much detail can be found in an image from a 100 years ago. You can really get lost in this image, so much to look at.
I was able to find a lot of the color based on postcards of the era, though many of them were very different from each other. I'm certain these buildings were painted a few times over the years.
Presently the only thing that stands in this picture is that statue, and even that was moved over quite a bit. A fountain in front of the opera house was moved miles away. The rest of the buildings were removed between 1960-1990.
This is actually a rare thing in photos of this era, the sky wasn't washed out. I was able to use the original sky. What was also interesting was that the photographer shot two images, about an hour or two apart. I chose this one because there was less traffic and everything was brighter.
Also note the people catchers on the front of some of those streetcars. They were used when a clumsy pedestrian would wander across and get nailed by them. This thing caught them. There is a lack of horses in this, it just happens to be, because there are none in this, but there were a few in the other photo. The streets were concrete if you were wondering, and the lines were painted by hand? if you look carefully, there are two stop and go traffic cops with yellow umbrella's.
