Colorized photo from 1907
Original title: State St south from Lake St

Location: 175 N State St, Chicago, IL
This is State St, seen from around 1907, at this time there are no cars, some of the street cars used to be driven by cable, but have been converted to electric.
On the left side, where that building stands, the one with the arched windows and candy store, that is where the Chicago Theater currently stands.
The large building on the left, second one in, is the Masonic temple, built in 1892, it became known as the tallest building in Chicago standing at a whopping 21 stories tall, it stayed as the tallest building because on the year it was built, a law was put into place stating it can't be any taller.
Its taller only because the clock tower was removed from the 1885 Board of trade building. So from 1895-1920, this building was the tallest around. It had a central court, nine floors were for shops and offices. Mason meeting rooms were at the very top and also served as a theater. Problem was, and the downfall to this building was that the elevators were terrible. They couldn't handle the crowds and it started to empty out. They demolished the temple in 1939, the internal services were poor, and they wanted to build the State Street subway. They would have had to modify the foundation, which would have been expensive to the tax payers, so it all worked out well in the end.
The third building on the left is the Marshall Field's Dept Store, which is still there today. The fourth one in, the Victorian, is the Pullman building, the fifth is The Carson Pirie Scott, which is also still there. And that sliver on the right is the Reliance building.
You can see it was quite a bustling market place. Lots of things to look for, such as the bird store (I never saw that one before), a cockatoo, a large teapot and a horse wearing a hat.
