The Palm Tavern, opened in 1931, it was a "Must Do" performance stop for the Who's Who of Jazz performers. It was located in the Chicago Landmark Black Metropolis, Bronzeville district.
The original owner was James Knight, however a woman by the name of Gerri Oliver purchased the Palm Tavern sometimes between 1951-1956. Originally she worked there as a waitress. Over the years they had many musicians and writers. Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, the Ink Spots, Josephine Baker, and other notable musicians. The famous poet and writer Gwendolyn Brooks, lived near by.
This was a place to relax if you were in Chicago's black middle class.
Miss Gerri Oliver ran this place till 2006. While it was open, she would chat with you and show you old pictures of all the famous people that came there. She died in 2020 at a 101 years old. The establishment was closed in 2006 and torn down almost immediately. Presently its an open lot.
