Description
Colorized photo from 1941
Original title: Entertainers at a Negro tavern
Photographer: Russell Lee
Location: 31st and Federal St, Chicago, IL
The photographers main assignment was to show what the poorer areas looked like, he photographed people, farms, cities and taverns like these. But it was more about the picture and the location rather than the people that was in it. In this image, we know more about the menu of this restaurant than the band he photographed. Like who were they? How many bands were there in those days that had a female drummer?
I chose a close spotlight because this was a small place, and I wanted to focus on the guy, and not that particular background.
I'm also guessing the piano is opened to increase its volume, there is only one mic. Also note the tubes, they said if they glow blue they are a good tube, if its purple, then gas may be leaking in, and its bad.
