Description
Colorized photo from 1907
Original title: Jackknife bridge
Location: Between W Jackson and W Van Buren
We are at the former site of the Metropolitan "L" bridge, its a rolling lift bridge built in 1895. It was designed by William Donald Scherzer, and its believed to be the first bridge of its kind, that was made for this location.
"It served the Metropolitan West Side Elevated, which consisted of the Garfield Park, Douglas Park, Logan Square, and Humboldt Park lines. Trains operating over the bridge used the Wells Street terminal or circled around the Loop elevated. CTA became the bridge's owner in 1947. Chicago Aurora & Elgin interurban trains used the bridge until 1953.
"CTA trains used the bridge until 1958 when it was replaced by the new rapid transit tracks in the median strip of the Congress Street (now Eisenhower) Expressway. The bridge and this portion of the "L" structure were then dismantled."
That large boat is a bulk freighter, named Pueblo, built in 1891 by the Milwaukee ship yard. It had one deck, was coat fired. While it looks like it was a clipper ship that was converted into something else, it actually left the factory looking like that. It survived till 1926, where it caught fire while wintering.
That strange looking submarine like vessel in the foreground, is unknown. Your guess is as good as any. One theory was that it was used to inspect caissons under water. But it was docked here over a number of years. Other ideas was that it was a left over for a ride of some kind. Its interesting anyway. Looks a little out of place.
