Description
Colorized photo from 1901
Original Title: The Lake front from the Illinois Central Station
Photographer: Detroit Publishing
Location: Grant Park, Roosevelt Rd & Michigan Ave
This was made as a 3 panel panorama. I've seen people assemble the first two on the left, but not the last one on the right. Seems the photographer didn't move the camera right or something moved because the tracks didn't line up.
I had to modify sections of the track to fix the overlap issue, it was a pain, but I think worth it, because you can see the entire rail yard area.
The view was from the top of the Illinois train depot, you can see the shadow of the tower on the right.
Nearly nothing of this image remains today. All those industrial factories are gone, and now its all skyscrapers. The stuff on the left is all gone as well. The museum is still there, as well as the congress hotel which you can't really see in here.
The park had a major make over, adding a ton of land beyond the tracks, and making this lawn into a wonderland.
At one point Studebaker had factories here, you can see the factory roughly where the smoke is coming out.
There are also some interesting signs in the left corner, like I have no idea what Kidney water was.
