Description
Colorized photo from 1890
Original title: Brown's landing, Rice Creek
Photographer: Detroit publishing
Location: Brown's Landing, Rice Creek
This is about how Detroit publishing likes to show off sometimes when they lack the material or models, they use themselves. And in this case, all their camera's including that giant one on the boat. Can you believe he takes that thing to huge mountains too?
It's called a mammoth plate camera, and can have dimensions of 18x21 and up to 22x25. Keep in mind, though that the camera does fold up, the glass plates it uses does not. Imagine carrying boxes of window panes with you, that is your film. You use it as little as possible, or have a boat or a train carry the rest.
Interestingly I was able to find all the specs on the boat, when it was made, launched etc, but no colors. It was built in 1881, its called a steam launch, built and left from Jacksonville. It's actually pretty long but you can't tell that by the perspective.
If you look carefully around the opening of the door, you can see the gun he keeps there for protection.
