Description
Colorized photo from 1910
Original Title: Lubin's Building and business district
Photographer: Unknown
Location: 404 East Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD
This street, actually at the time, 8 blocks of it, was dedicated to adult entertainment. Burlesque shows, and other forms of partly naked debauchery was found here. Not all of it had ladies, some places featured Vaudeville like Lubin's.
Interestingly, these buildings are still around, and for the most part, they still serve the same kinds of goods. The block has been shortened to just one block now, because of anti-smut laws. But places like the Gayety are still there, despite a fire they had in the late 1960s. Today its an adult video and book store. The Lubin's is also still there, but you would never recognize it.
Lubin's theater was the only place I ever found where they described the colors, which were cream and gold, and covered in lights. It was designed to grab attention.
