I don't know if this is the shortest run of a car company, but it could be. This is Hackett Motor Car Co. In 1916, Mansell Hackett purchased the Argo Motor Co., of Jackson, MI, maker of the Argo Cyclecar. His business model was to buy up companies going out of business, and then doing something with them.
He created the Hackett Motor Car Co, and build the American automobile called the Hackett.
Originally located in Jackson, Michigan, the company produced a line of touring cars and roadsters. Interestingly, they didn't make their own parts. Instead they used parts made by other auto companies, and sort of built a hybrid between those parts. (I wonder if this is where the term "hack job" came from?)
In 1918, he wasn't able to obtain parts, but felt it was a good time to move, they went to Grand Rapids, MI. When they opened in 1919, they were able to resume again. They made 12 cars a week, but the company finally failed in 1919. The company lasted only 3 years and made a total of 118 cars. They are very hard to find today.
Then one day, a person named David Buick bought the small company, and they built his new Loraine Car, he was the builder of the Buick car. After that Hackett went back to what he was doing before this, buying up defunct businesses again.
Today this building does still exist. It was used as a warehouse for a number of years. And recently they decided to turn it into a Hackett car museum.
