Description
Colorized photo from 1897
Original title: Two men working in blacksmith shop and boy watching
Photographer: Witteman
Location: Ohio
I just want to say that I can't think of a worse place to work barefoot than at a blacksmith. I know they didn't wear shoes in those days because they were expensive and kids grow fast. But still, it just seems like a dumb idea to let a kid in there without any shoes, let alone pants.
I chose this image because it already had a painting like quality to it. I liked how the light fell on it, but mostly I liked that boy watching on. He had that Huck Finn look to him.
The original image as awful. It was a scan a print, so there was a paper texture, and it was hazy and scratched. It lacked detail. You can barely see that there are horseshoes along that top beam. You can't really see it in mine, because I added shadow there, as I wanted the eyes on the the boy and smith.
They didn't say where in Ohio this was, just some place.
