If you wanted to learn the trade of blacksmithing, and you didn't want to become an apprentice to a blacksmith, you would go to a class like this. Like trade schools of today, blacksmithing was one of those classes.
Each student had their own forge and anvil. The floors appear to be dirt, which is good because hot metal can cause a fire. And students will probably drop things.
