Description
Colorized photo from 1917
Original Title: Soldier undergoing dental treatment during WWI
Location: Nielles, France
The Story: You can feel the duress and the pain in this guys face. Look at his forehead, its covered in scream wrinkles. Clasping his hands and digging in his fingers to distract from what's happening, trying not to scream out that open window.
Rudimentary lighting, nothing but a window, your eyes focused on that one cloud hoping it won't cover the sun any time soon. The chair is a folding chair, but it does have a headrest, I think its the type you would have in the army since its portable. They built a platform under it to raise it up. The dentist has to stoop low to see in. I can't tell how the drill works, but I'm guessing it doesn't work well.
The image: I removed the entire left half. This was shot through an open door. It simply looked like a peeping tom shot leaving it in, and it added nothing but distraction. I also removed the photographer in the mirror. There was glare on the table, but it had enough detail.
The colors: While this was taken in France, the soldiers are from New Zealand and the boots they wore in those days were tall red boots. With a olive drab outfit. And of course white dental uniforms. The room I wanted a hotel feel, balancing it with pink because the wallpaper is flower based.
