Description
Colorized photo from 1905
Original Title: NY Central Railroad Depot
Location: Syracuse, NY, Franklin and West Fayette Streets
You can almost get a sense of being there. The smell of oil and smoke in the air. The heat of the day rising off the ballast. The sound of a train whistle and bell. The feel of the ground shake as the train roars past. There is simply something wonderful about being next to these giant machines.
This is the New York Central station in Syracuse, it was built in 1895, demolished in 1936. That red car in the middle is an electric car (yes they had them then, its not a new thing), its called an Electric Brougham. It looks a lot like a horse and buggy, only there is no horse. Otherwise its built exactly the same.
